The demographic transition is responsible for the rising life expectancy in our society. This change even leads to consequences in healthcare: Because of the higher ages people are more likely to develop multimorbid diseases.  Additional age-related impairment in cognitive, visual, fine and gross motor skills further hinder to manage their everyday life themselves.

One way to address those problems is to use technology based solutions. Therefor Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) as one of the most recent research areas defines technical concepts, products or services that intend to support the everyday life of an elderly person according to his/her needs in a domestic setting. Within this domain humanoid service robots tend to have high assistive potential as they are designed to act in a human manner within a human environment. Though technology leads to the development of high performance humanoid robot prototypes, there are also low-cost mass production service robots available today.

Aim of the project

In this project we investigate how such mass production humanoid social robots could assist elderly persons in their everyday life. First investigations are conducted by using NAO - a robot produced from Aldebaran robotics. We are trying to conceptualize and develop suitable and user-related prototype applications. The main focus is set to

  1. cognitive support, which comprises e.g. to remind the patient to take his/her medicine, motivate to do exercises, or just talk with the patient to avoid loneliness
  2. medical treatment assistance, e.g. to measure important vital signs or react in case of emergency
  3. external communication and monitoring, e.g. to share measurement results with responsible physicians or store them in an electronic health record.
